Good Morning, Everyone
Transport for London (TfL) is making everyone’s morning commute a little more inclusive. Rather than the typical “ladies and gentlemen” preface to announcements, the tube is opting for phrases, like “good morning, everyone,” that can suit those outside of the standard gender binary. All of the preexisting pre-recorded announcements will be replaced with new gender neutral ones.
It was previously an official TfL rule that every tube message must begin by addressing “ladies and gentlemen,” but after a push from London LGBTQ+ activists, the organization shifted to be more inclusive.
“We have reviewed the language that we use in announcements and elsewhere and will make sure that it is fully inclusive, reflecting the great diversity of London,” said Mark Evers, customer strategy director. A spokesperson for TfL added that “Language is extremely important to the lesbian, gay, bi and trans community, and the way we use it can help ensure all people feel included.”
