With only 27 plus-size models, less than 1% of the entirety, walking in 2016, New York Fashion Week hasn’t exactly been known for inclusivity, which is all too common in the industry. While much of 2017 Fashion Week in September will remain as it has been, there’s an exciting addition that will improve the lacking body representation for women.
In the midst of the other 70 showcases, Torrid will be the first plus-size label to earn a spot in Fashion Week. The brand designs clothing ranging from size 10 to 30, and will show 40 looks on the runway from their spring collection.
Torrid “heralds a bold new move towards increased diversity and inclusiveness in the fashion industry,” a rep said.
What’s more is that Torrid’s runway show will also be the semifinal of their model search competition, which is dedicated to finding talented but underrepresented models and giving them opportunity.
“We appreciate the brand’s commitment to size inclusiveness and body-positive message and believe they are an excellent partner as we continue pushing the boundaries of the fashion industry,” said Catherine Bennett, senior vice president and managing director of IMG Fashion.
“As a brand that is committed to helping all customers find her personal style, we at Torrid feel it is important to showcase the diversity of plus offerings on the most influential stage in fashion,” Torrid CEO Kay Hong said.
While it is inarguable that Torrid is influential in diversifying high fashion, there’s still plenty of room for improvement. The average American woman wears a size 16, yet brands like Torrid are still fractionally represented in the industry. Still Torrid’s presence in NYFW is a step forward for body positivity and representation that’s worth celebrating.
